The Australian Amateur Ranking System provides players, as well as the industry, the opportunity to monitor player movements based on results from particular events (known as Australian Ranking Events), across the peak of amateur golf in Australia.

Golf Australia's High Performance Program uses the Rankings (along with other ranking systems that exist within amateur golf) as a tool, not a benchmark, when selecting teams/squads for national or international competition. The Australian Amateur Championship, as well as other prominent Australian golf championships, uses the Rankings as an entry criterion for their events.

Rankings are maintained for the following:
• Open Men’s Rankings
• Open Women’s Rankings
• Boys Rankings (under 18)
• Girls Rankings (under 18)
• Senior Men’s Rankings (55 and over)
• Senior Women’s Rankings (55 and over)

The System is points-based, which is consistent with the Official World Golf Rankings (Professional), as well as other major amateur golf ranking systems. The system awards points to players according to the players’ finishing positions. The number of points is related to the strength of the field based on the number of, and ranking of, players in the starting field.

It is based over a 52-week cycle. Again this is consistent with the majority of major amateur ranking systems, commencing 1 November each year and concluding 31 October each year. The player with the highest average at 31 October each year is recognised as the winner of their designated Ranking System. A 12-month cycle is used as opposed to a two-year cycle to ensure players’ more recent form is reflected, and to guarantee a player who has just entered the Rankings is not disadvantaged due to their fewer number of events contested.

Any player, irrespective of nationality, is eligible to accrue points for, and be recognised as the winner of, their designated Ranking System. The inclusion of non-Australians ensures a more accurate reflection of every player’s ability in the context of the overall rankings.

The Australian Amateur Ranking System will continue to develop and evolve over time as points are adjusted and Ranking Events evolve. In order to provide a fair and equitable Ranking System, at least two events from each State are eligible to be granted Ranking Status in each category of Ranking System. The number of events is restricted to ensure the group of Ranking Events remains exclusive, and that the events provide high-level competitive opportunities for those who play by ensuring the top players compete in the same events.
