Qld's Wendy O’Connell (Northlakes) has taken out the Queensland Women’s Senior Amateur Championship at Horton Park Golf Club.
O’Connell qualified in the second position for the match play but was elevated to the leading position after Vicki Laws (Surfers Paradise) withdrew due to Club Championship commitments. O’Connell remained undefeated to take out this year’s event in stunning form.
Western Australian player Glenys Ferguson (Wanneroo) was out to holt O’Connell’s good form. After some early misfortune Ferguson fought hard to get O’Connell back to all square heading down the last hole. Ferguson found the right hand rough off the tee while O’Connell hooked her tee shot in the left trees. O’Connell then played a fantastic recovery shot hitting the green to apply the pressure.
Ferguson’s approach was left short, leaving her a fifty foot chip to the pin which she played on the green eight feet from the flag. O’Connell’s nerves nearly got the better of her after putting her first about seven feet to the right of the hole. Ferguson then missed her putt allowing O’Connell to put her second putt in for the win.
Jane Franklin (Kingaroy) was victorious in division 1 of the 55-64yrs matchplay final, while Robyn Boreham (Headland) took out the division 2.
Anne Alletson Brown (Boonah) proved too strong winning 7&6 in division 1 of the over 65 age group, with division 2 being taken out by Wantima member Joy Cann.
Congratulations must go to Horton Park Golf Club for again hosting this year’s event over the five days.
